Buy farm-direct when possible. Sod starts dying within 12 hours of cutting. Farm-direct suppliers cut sod the day of delivery — avoid middlemen and re-wholesalers.
Water 2–3× daily for 2 weeks. New St. Augustine needs 10–15 minutes of water per session for the first 14 days in Texas heat.
Don't mow for 3 weeks. Then never cut more than ⅓ of blade height. Keep St. Augustine at 3–4 inches tall.
Prep the soil first. Houston clay soil benefits from a layer of topsoil or garden mix before sod installation. Buy both from the same supplier to save on delivery.
